 The Irrawaddy River  The Irrawaddy River (English: Ayeyarwaddy, Irrawaddy) is a large river that flows from the far north to the south of Myanmar. The Irrawaddy River is the largest river in Myanmar. It is also the longest and most important river. The Irrawaddy River, formed by the confluence of the Inmaikha (Maykha) and Malikha rivers, flows roughly almost straight from north to south and flows into the Andaman Sea through the delta. The catchment area is 413,000 square kilometers. It has been used as a waterway for trade since the 6th century AD. During the British colonial period, irrigation was built for agriculture and benefited agriculture. Life is as important today as it was then.
